Kalista Hallberg dies in fatal Muscatine shooting
Fatal Muscatine shooting death of Kalista Hallberg
On Monday afternoon, authorities responded to a distress call at the Hy-Vee retail outlet on 2nd Avenue in Muscatine, Iowa, where multiple reports of gunfire had been received.
Upon arrival, responding officers observed that 37-year-old Kalista Hallberg from the Letts community had sustained fatal injuries due to multiple bullet wounds.
The preliminary assessment indicated that Ian Hernandez from Davenport was the likely perpetrator. He had fled the scene and was subsequently apprehended after his red minivan was located at the crossroads of Highways 61 and 38.
Emergency medical assistance was administered by police until the Muscatine Fire Department arrived to take over. Hernandez was transported to a regional medical center and then moved to the University of Iowa Hospital, where he was reported to be in serious condition with potentially life-endangering injuries.
According to official statements, this incident stemmed from a persistent personal conflict between Hallberg and Hernandez. Police have indicated that their investigation is ongoing but no immediate threats to the wider public are currently being considered.
To ensure safety, law enforcement is urging the public to steer clear of the area encompassing Highways 61 and 38, as well as the surrounding streets near the Hy-Vee store. The retail establishment remains closed, with Hy-Vee management confirming they will only reopen once it is deemed safe and ready for customer access.
In a formal announcement, Hy-Vee representatives expressed profound sorrow for the community’s loss and extended sympathies to those affected. They stated that the company is actively collaborating with the Muscatine Police Department and have put measures in place to support employees who were directly impacted by the tragic event.
