Fatal Newark shooting death of Ziyad Cook
Law enforcement agencies in Essex County are intensifying their search for the shooter involved in a deadly incident that claimed the life of a teenager in Newark several days ago. The authorities are examining all possibilities to identify the individual responsible for the violence.
Yesterday, the residents of Irvington came together to pay tribute to Ziyad Cook, a 16-year-old student who recently lost his life. The memorial event at Irvington High School featured emotional displays and shared memories, highlighting his impact on the community.
The fatal shooting incident occurred on Thursday evening near Brookdale Avenue in Newark, around 6:00 p.m. Ziyad Cook and a 17-year-old companion sustained injuries during the attack; unfortunately, Cook did not survive and passed away at University Hospital after receiving medical care.
In a touching gesture of remembrance, mourners released balloons adorned with the school’s colors and Cook’s uniform number. His family and friends described him as a gifted football player, a high-achieving student, a protective sibling, a devoted son, and a loyal friend, emphasizing his positive character and talents.
Speaking at the event, Cook’s mother, Ranessha Bell, shared her anguish, saying, “If you had the chance to know him, your compassion would have been immediate. I am in constant disbelief over this devastating tragedy.” She continued, “I’ve dedicated my life to raising him safely, yet such pointless acts of violence can strike without warning.”
The superintendent of Irvington Public Schools, April Vauss, praised Cook’s contributions, noting, “He was a true inspiration, representing the ideals of the Irvington High School Blue Knights through his athletic skills and his empathetic nature.”
Investigators are imploring citizens to step forward with any information they might possess regarding the shooting, as it could be crucial in solving the case and ensuring justice is served.
