Fatal Kaufman County car crash death of Zabar McKellar
A terrible collision on Highway 20 in Kaufman County resulted in the deaths of four individuals connected to a Fort Worth family on Saturday. The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the deceased as Zabar McKellar, his spouse Krishaun McKellar, their 15-year-old son Kason McKellar, and Zabar’s father Billy McKellar.
The group of travelers was involved in the accident when their vehicle was hit by a commercial truck that was going very quickly. Officials stated the truck driver was asleep at the wheel, and the resulting multi-car accident was considered catastrophic by investigators.
Evan McKellar, the family’s 20-year-old daughter, was the only family member to survive the crash. She is currently receiving treatment in critical condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
The person driving the large truck, identified as 27-year-old Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, was taken into custody at the scene. Charges against him include five counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
The truck was operated by Hope Trans LLC, a business located in Tacoma, Washington. Records show the company has received multiple citations for enabling its drivers to work beyond the legally permitted number of hours. Attempts to contact the company have not been successful.
There is still no official identification of a fifth person who died in a different vehicle involved in the crash.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist with the medical costs for Evan McKellar. In a message attached to the fundraiser, a family representative expressed gratitude for the public’s support, prayers, and compassion during this period of profound grief.
Updates from the investigation are planned to be released on Wednesday.
