Fatal Chicago shooting death of Ronald Jones

A man named Ronald Jones died following a drive-by shooting in Chicago’s West Chatham neighborhood on Tuesday evening. Chicago authorities reported the incident occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Jones was observed standing near the first block of West 79th Street when a dark-colored automobile arrived and its occupant discharged several shots.

Video recordings from the scene depicted a considerable police force gathered near a Citgo gas station. Medical personnel transported Jones to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition deteriorated, resulting in his death. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed his identity.

A community pastor, Donovan Price, who has experience with homicide investigations, described the scene as “heart-wrenching.” He noted, “It’s disheartening but unfortunately familiar. Some suggested he was involved in no wrongdoing, though he was known locally as a handyman and a neighborhood fix-it expert. I suspect this was a case of mistaken identity.”

A staff member from an adjacent beauty salon, who chose not to appear on camera, shared that Jones was a well-known neighborhood auto mechanic who frequently worked on vehicles in the adjacent parking area.

Chicago police stated that no suspects have been apprehended, and Area 2 detectives are actively pursuing leads in this ongoing investigation.
