Fatal Buena Park explosion death of Jasmine Nguyen
The Orange County community is rallying around the family of an 8-year-old girl who died after an illegal fireworks display malfunctioned during Independence Day celebrations. According to reports, a large, unauthorized pyrotechnic display in a residential area of Buena Park went awry on the evening of July 4th.
Officials from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department have identified the child as Jasmine Nguyen, an 11-year-old from Anaheim. Tragically, Jasmine was killed just before 10 p.m. while celebrating the Fourth of July with her family in Buena Park.
Police state that a resident initiated the dangerous fireworks incident. At some point, the explosives “malfunctioned and began venting erratically” towards the child. A burning projectile subsequently ignited nearby fireworks, resulting in a devastating blast.
Despite the horrific circumstances, authorities reported that Jasmine was the only person injured in the incident. A suspect, a 46-year-old man, has been arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter related to the fatal fireworks accident. He was later released on $25,000 bail pending further legal action.
Community support has poured in for Jasmine’s mother, Bi Doan. An online fundraising campaign set up in her daughter’s memory had raised over $27,000 by Monday afternoon. The fundraiser described Bi Doan as a young, single mother grieving the loss of her 8-year-old child.
“Jasmine may be gone far too soon, but the impact she made in those few short years is eternal,” the statement read. “She had a heart as big as her smile – one that noticed when someone was sad and made sure no one ever felt left out. In her eight years, Jasmine showed us what it truly means to live in the moment, to love without reservation, and to find magic in the small things. Rest in peace, precious girl. Your light will never dim.” Jasmine is survived by her 7-year-old sister.
