Law enforcement officials announced on Monday that an ex-boyfriend has been taken into custody at the California-Mexico border following the death of an 18-year-old woman from Morgan Hill. The body of Marissa DiNapoli was located near the Anderson River several days ago.
The authorities revealed that Martin Mendoza, who is 20 years old, is being held responsible for the death of his former partner. According to police reports and workplace information, the two individuals were romantically involved at some point in time.
Officials stated that criminal charges, including murder, have been filed against Mendoza. It was reported that he was apprehended while attempting to enter the United States from Mexico.
In a public statement, authorities expressed that Mendoza’s capture represents a notable progress in the case. They emphasized that although this development might offer some comfort, the community continues to experience deep sorrow. Marissa was described as a bright and caring individual with aspirations for the future.
The family of the deceased issued a brief statement requesting confidentiality. They specifically stated they did not intend to create a fundraising campaign through online platforms like GoFundMe. Instead, they encouraged supporters to express their sympathy through thoughtful gestures and shared memories.
Attempts to contact Mendoza for further information were not fruitful on Monday.
Marissa was last observed on June 29th and was considered missing the following day by worried acquaintances. She had informed someone that she was spending time with a friend and expected to return home shortly after.
Her body was discovered on July 2nd using aerial technology.
Morgan Hill police identified Mendoza as a person of interest in the case early on. He was considered a key figure during the search for the missing person. Investigators, including representatives from the FBI and other federal agencies, worked together on this matter. A team of 30 professionals dedicated their efforts to solving the case.
In observance of this tragic event, three community gatherings have been scheduled. These events will take place at Central High School on Monday and at the Morgan Hill Community Cultural Center on Tuesday and Wednesday.
