Norfolk law enforcement have officially identified the individual killed during an incident in the parking area of a church following a memorial service. The victim was Savon L. Majette, a 27-year-old resident of Chesapeake.

According to police reports, Majette was located close to one of the entrances of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral late last week and did not survive the injuries he sustained at the scene.

In addition to Majette, law enforcement officials previously mentioned that another man was wounded during the incident. The reported injuries for the second individual were not considered immediately dangerous to his life.

Eyewitness Barbara Fields, who is related to the victim, confirmed her nephew’s identity as Majette at the scene last Friday. Fields indicated that Majette was participating in a service at a funeral home nearby and stated he had a daughter who will be mourning his passing.

Fields reported that two individuals targeted her relative with gunfire. She further stated that her nephew responded by firing back before the assault ceased.

“He was stepping out of the church building and two individuals began shooting at him,” Fields recounted. “They continued firing and struck him multiple times. All I know is that he was lying there. We were anticipating the medical examiner to collect his body from the funeral home,” she expressed.

Lawmakers have not released any information regarding the possible motives or identified any suspects. Nonetheless, authorities have confirmed that they are treating the death as a criminal homicide.

The local prosecutor for Norfolk, Ramin Fatehi, issued a statement denouncing the violence. “Funerals are typically characterized by heightened emotional responses,” Fatehi remarked to journalists at the location. “Even in my professional experience, I have encountered violence erupting during funeral services. It is essential for people to manage their feelings appropriately. Regardless of their state of grief or anger, responding with gunfire is unacceptable.”
