Fatal Baton Rouge shooting death of Anthony Pursley
The East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the man killed during an incident involving Baton Rouge police early Saturday morning. The deceased is Anthony Pursley, aged 38.
The fatal event occurred on Washington Avenue near North Foster Drive. Baton Rouge police initially responded to a disturbance call concerning an individual experiencing emotional distress. Department officials mentioned the subject was under suspicion for possible narcotics influence at the time.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the male suspect brandishing a sharp object. When faced with an altercation, police attempted to use a taser but reported the device failed to immobilize the suspect. An officer subsequently fired their weapon.
Emergency medical personnel provided care at the scene after the shooting. However, law enforcement confirmed the male subject was pronounced deceased. Two officers assigned to the scene have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine procedure according to the Baton Rouge Police Department.
