Fatal Indianapolis shooting deaths of Azareaon S. Cole and Xavion Jackson
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) reported receiving multiple reports of disturbances around 1:27 a.m. on Saturday, July 5. The initial call involved a disturbance at the intersection of West Washington Street and South Meridian Avenue, prompting officers to respond. Subsequently, reports of another disturbance emerged at the location where South Illinois Street and West Washington Street meet.
During the officers’ response, they heard the sound of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found several individuals injured. IMPD stated that officers and Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) medics, who were assisting on the scene, immediately began providing emergency aid to the wounded.
Five of the wounded were transported to hospitals for medical treatment. A sixth person, who was able to walk to a hospital, received care shortly after the initial reports.
One of the injured individuals, identified as a sixteen-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Among the six people initially reported as needing medical attention, a minor was later confirmed deceased. This minor, identified as a fifteen-year-old male, passed away in the hospital. The Marion County Coroner’s Office provided the names of the deceased on Monday, July 7, identifying them as fifteen-year-old Azareaon S. Cole and sixteen-year-old Xavion Jackson.
IMPD confirmed that the other injured individuals were identified as a sixteen-year-old, a seventeen-year-old, and a twenty-one-year-old. According to the police department, officers gathered several firearms from the area involved in the incident.
Seven individuals were taken into custody by the police for questioning regarding the event. However, it remains unclear at this time whether these individuals have any connection to the shooting. The police have not provided any information about potential suspects or the reason behind the incident.
