Fatal Amarillo shooting death of Christopher Scott Copeland
On Tuesday morning, Amarillo authorities confirmed a man was killed in a shooting incident. Police were dispatched to a location on Janet Drive following reports of gunfire.
The Amarillo Police Department reported finding 54-year-old Christopher Scott Copeland with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services, including medical personnel and fire crews, were immediately dispatched to the scene at the 3400 block of Janet Drive.
Despite resuscitation attempts by paramedics from Amarillo Medical Services, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Amarillo Fire Department also responded to the incident.
According to police, the suspected individual involved in the shooting was apprehended shortly after the incident occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. on July 8th.
Lawrence Scott Johnston, who authorities initially identified as the suspected shooter, has been formally arrested and charged with murder. This update was provided by the Amarillo Police Department later that day.
APD homicide detectives secured the arrest after conducting thorough background checks and face-to-face interviews as part of their investigation. The department emphasized that this appears to be a standalone incident and poses no current danger to the public.
Johnston has been processed for booking at the Randall County Detention Center. The Homicide Unit continues its examination of the case. Officials have requested the public’s assistance in submitting any potential digital evidence, including audio recordings capturing the incident, to aid investigators.
