The Austin Police Department has confirmed the tragic passing of a pedestrian following a fatal accident on July 4, a day commemorating Independence Day in the city.

Responding to reports at 8:51 a.m. on that date, officers arrived at the scene on the Northbound Service Road of South Interstate 35 to find an individual deceased. Authorities identified the victim as Jesus Rodriguez Barragan, a 40-year-old local resident.

Investigators revealed that the vehicle involved in the collision departed the area without stopping, and no trace of it was left behind. This incident represents the 49th fatality on Austin’s roads in 2025, contributing to a total of 53 such deaths so far this year.

The ongoing examination of the crash is focused on determining the responsible party. The Austin Police Department is appealing to the public for any information and encouraging tips to be reported to their Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111. Alternatively, individuals can submit anonymous tips to the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program via their website or by calling 512-472-8477.
