Emergency services were dispatched to Cedar Lake Beach shortly before 5:50 p.m. on July 13 following a distress call. According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, swimmers noticed Velez, identified by authorities as 33 years old from Mount Arlington, lacking responsiveness in the water and contacted emergency services. Medical personnel conveyed Velez to a regional healthcare facility, where she was confirmed deceased.
A spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the report from the county’s medical examiner regarding this incident is still pending review. However, the authorities stated that there is no suspicion of criminal activity involved.
This particular fatality adds to the total of at least eleven drownings that have occurred in New Jersey this year. The New Jersey State Health Assessment Data indicates that for the current year, 74 individuals have died from drowning incidents, which contrasts with the 72 fatalities reported in 2023.
