Fatal Worland shooting death of Derek Fyffe

The official medical examiner confirmed Wednesday that the man killed Monday in the officer-involved incident was 37-year-old Derek Fyffe from Worland. According to reports, Fyffe fired at the responding officers as they approached near a bridge.

Cowboy State Daily reported Wednesday that the Worland Police Department’s Tuesday statement identified Fyffe as the suspect involved in a felony property damage case from the previous day. The incident began with a person alerting authorities to Fyffe’s presence.

The police statement explains officers arrived after receiving a report. Fyffe was found outside his vehicle and quickly entered it when approached. He initially hesitated to exit. Following his exit, he reportedly engaged in physical resistance with the officers.

Sources indicate Fyffe then produced a weapon and began shooting at the four responding officers. In self-defense, the officers returned fire and stopped the threat. Tragically, the suspect died at the scene. One officer suffered minor gunshot wounds and was treated briefly at Washakie Medical Center. The two officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation.
