Fatal Calhoun County car crash death of Sherry Short and Daniel Waln

Two individuals lost their lives in a multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday evening along Interstate 26 in Calhoun County, South Carolina, after a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction veered into oncoming traffic.

According to Corporal Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 5 p.m. near mile marker 120 in the eastbound lanes. Authorities say five eastbound vehicles — a 2018 GMC SUV, a 2017 Lexus sedan, a 2023 Kia sedan, a 2022 Subaru SUV, and a 2019 GMC SUV — were struck after a westbound 2013 Chevrolet sedan left the roadway, breached a cable barrier, and entered eastbound traffic.

The Chevrolet initially struck the 2018 GMC SUV, resulting in a chain reaction crash involving the other four vehicles. The drivers of both the 2013 Chevrolet sedan and the 2018 GMC SUV were pronounced dead at the scene.

Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth identified the victims as 61-year-old Sherry Short of Springfield, South Carolina, and 34-year-old Daniel Waln of St. Leo, Florida.

Five other individuals traveling in the remaining vehicles sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
