A man has been formally accused of attempted murder following an incident where he allegedly stabbed a police officer in Amherst. Erie County prosecutors announced charges against Rayquell M. Grant, 26, who is accused of jumping from a residence and attacking an officer with a knife on Saturday.

According to authorities, Amherst Police were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call at the 4800 block of North Bailey Avenue. Grant allegedly breached the home’s rear window and attacked a responding officer, stabbing him twice with large blades. The injured officer, identified as Aidan Vangelov, and other officers returned fire, wounding the suspect.

Vangelov suffered arm injuries from the stabbing and was transported to the medical center. Grant sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and arm, and he is being held without bail pending trial. The charges include first-degree attempted murder, assault, and a prior outstanding domestic violence warrant.

Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane confirmed his office reviewed the incident, stating the officers’ actions were justified. Grant faces a potential life sentence if convicted.
