Fatal Calhoun County car crash death of Sherry Short
Investigators have confirmed two fatalities resulting from a multi-vehicle collision along I-26 in Calhoun County. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Nick Pye, the accident transpired Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m. in the eastbound direction of the interstate, near mile marker 120.
Pye explained that five automobiles were traveling eastbound on I-26 at the time. These vehicles included a 2018 GMC sport utility vehicle, a 2017 Lexus sedan, a 2023 Kia passenger car, a 2022 Subaru sport utility vehicle, and a 2019 GMC utility vehicle. A westbound 2013 Chevrolet sedan departed the roadway, collided with a support cable barrier, and crossed into the eastbound lanes.
Upon impact, the Chevrolet sedan struck a 2018 GMC sport utility vehicle. This initial collision triggered a chain reaction, causing both vehicles to crash into the remaining four automobiles. The drivers of the 2018 GMC sport utility vehicle and the 2013 Chevrolet sedan, who succumbed to their injuries, were identified by Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth as 61-year-old Sherry Short from Springfield, South Carolina, and 34-year-old Daniel Waln from St. Leo, Florida.
Five additional individuals, including drivers and passengers from the other vehicles involved, sustained injuries and were transported to a regional medical facility. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has indicated the incident is currently under examination.
