Fatal Linn County shooting death of Oliver Mercer

The Linn County Sheriff’s office reported receiving a 911 dispatch on July 15, 2025, at 8:41 p.m. concerning a strange situation near Washburn Heights Drive. This road, known for its panoramic views of the Willamette Valley, is a popular spot for the public. The initial report described finding a woman lying on the road with visible blood on her head.

When authorities arrived, they discovered an elderly woman with injuries consistent with trauma. According to witness accounts, her son, Oliver Mercer, a 67-year-old resident of Lebanon, was present at the top of Washburn Heights Drive. He was reportedly suffering from suicidal ideation. As deputies approached the viewpoint, they observed Mercer driving down the hill. A bottle of alcohol was visible in his possession between his legs.

When deputies stopped to speak with Mercer, the suspect immediately displayed a handgun, holding it against his own head. Attempts to calm the situation verbally failed, and Mercer drove away. Multiple agencies, including Oregon State Police, initiated a pursuit. During the chase, Mercer veered towards Lebanon, colliding with several law enforcement vehicles. With tactical support from Oregon State Police, his vehicle was successfully maneuvered off the road near Denney School Road and Highway 34. As officers secured the area, Mercer fired one shot at himself. He was rushed to Corvallis Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries. Mercer’s mother was also taken to Lebanon Community Hospital with minor injuries.

The ongoing investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office includes examining the initial 911 call, the status of the woman found, and the circumstances leading to Mercer’s actions. Authorities suspect other individuals in the vicinity may possess relevant information. The public is urged to contact Detective Scott Tennant at (541) 967-3950 if they have any leads.

This incident required significant coordination among the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Albany Police Department, Corvallis Police Department, Lebanon Police Department, Brownsville Rural Fire District, and Lebanon Fire District.
