Corey Adams, a freshman football player at the University of Mississippi, was fatally shot over the weekend in Cordova, Tennessee, according to a statement released by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday.

Authorities discovered Adams suffering from a gunshot wound inside a car at an intersection in the Cordova area, located on the outskirts of Memphis, late Saturday night. Emergency responders attempted life-saving procedures until the arrival of Shelby County Fire personnel, who later confirmed Corey Adams had died at the scene.

In addition to Adams, four other men sustained gunshot injuries in the same incident. They were transported to area hospitals in private vehicles and are expected to survive, as their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

No arrests have been made, and officials stated that the case is currently being investigated as a homicide. No suspects have been identified at this time.

Corey Adams, 18, hailed from New Orleans and was considered one of the nation’s top prospects on the defensive line before joining Ole Miss.

In a statement shared on social media, the University of Mississippi football program expressed its heartbreak over the loss, saying, “Our program is devastated by the tragic death of Corey Adams. Our thoughts go out to his loved ones as we grieve this incredible loss and we ask for the Ole Miss community’s support and respect for the privacy of those affected.”

Adams’ former high school team, the Edna Karr Cougars in New Orleans, also mourned his passing in a heartfelt tribute posted on Facebook. “Corey Adams was more than just a football player—he was a friend, a brother, a son, and an exceptional young man,” the team wrote. “We may never understand why this happened, but we will never forget him.”
