The South Bend law enforcement agency issued a statement on July 19, confirming the death of 61-year-old Grant Burkett from South Bend. He died as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle mishap that happened on Michigan Street in the very early morning of Saturday, July 19.
Around 4:45 a.m. on July 19, South Bend police were dispatched to Michigan Street and Ireland Road following a report of a motorcycle collision with an injured person. Upon their arrival at the scene, officers found Burkett suffering from critical injuries, and he was later pronounced dead at the location.
The preliminary inquiry indicates Burkett was heading west on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway, which is also called the U.S. 20 Bypass, and tried to take the northbound exit to Michigan Street. The available evidence suggests the motorcycle was unable to handle the curve, leaving the road and colliding on Michigan Street shortly after. No other cars were involved in the incident.
Burkett’s relatives have been informed about the situation. The incident is still being looked into by the authorities.
