Fatal North Birmingham shooting death of Willie James Powell
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Police reports indicate that a man, identified as Willie James Powell, was shot by his own son in North Birmingham on Tuesday. The shooting is reported to have taken place around midday.
According to the Birmingham Police Department, the incident occurred in the 3800 block of 4th Street West. This location is within the Hooper City neighborhood, situated close to the Hooper City Park Rec Center.
Willie James Powell, who was 36 years old, was struck by gunfire at approximately 3 p.m. Emergency medical services tried to provide aid at the scene. Despite their efforts, Mr. Powell was transported to UAB Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Birmingham authorities state that the shooting followed an altercation between father and son. The son has been detained by law enforcement officials.
