Search and rescue teams recovered the three bodies on Wednesday morning just south of a boat ramp. SCSO identified the victims as 28-year-old Marlon Mendez, 31-year-old Rudy Perez and 52-year-old Jose Yanes. Agencies involved in the search and recovery effort included Shelby County Search and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.
John Morris, the sheriff’s department public information officer, stated two bodies were first located around 11 a.m., with the third found at 12:45 p.m. It has been a difficult day for the families of the three missing men. Agencies searched the water as a growing crowd of loved ones gathered in the forest along the Mississippi River.
Yanes’ family stated he was fishing with his friends on the river. They mentioned he has six children, the youngest of whom is only 12 years old. Doug Ammons, owner of a general store near the river, commented that people getting lost or drowning in the area happens too often.
“This is a horrific tragedy right here, and it occurs way too frequently,†Ammons explained. “But I understand how it can happen.†Ammons urged people to stay out of the Mississippi River, describing it as “lethally dangerous.†“The likelihood of facing the mighty Mississippi one-on-one, you’re going to lose,†he added. “Especially without a flotation device.â€
The authorities noted the medical examiner is still determining the cause of death.
