Fatal Oahu car crash death of Kylee Chun
A preliminary account indicates a 25-year-old mother passed away early Sunday morning following a serious traffic incident on a major roadway in Oahu. The Honolulu medical examiner confirmed the identity of the deceased as Kylee Chun.
Law enforcement reports detail that the collision transpired around 3:45 a.m. Sunday on the H-1 Freeway. According to the police, Chun was observed traveling eastbound within the westbound lanes, just west of the Punahou Street overpass. The involved vehicle collided with another car, driven by a 77-year-old man heading westbound.
Honolulu Police Department officials stated Chun was not secured by a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Unofficially credited with the initial rescue efforts, bystanders managed to free Chun from her vehicle. Emergency medical services transported her to a hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced deceased.
The male driver involved in the collision is reported to be in stable condition following the incident. A public fundraising initiative via GoFundMe has been created to assist Chun’s family with funeral and memorial costs, as well as to provide financial support for her two young children, aged five and three.
According to information on the fundraising page, Chun and her family relocated to Hawaii from California in January of this year, having previously endured the widespread wildfires in their previous location. The westbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway were closed in the designated area to allow for the ongoing investigation.
Inquiries into the factors contributing to the crash are pending; however, initial assessments suggest intoxication from alcohol or drugs is not currently considered a likely cause. Additionally, preliminary findings do not indicate that excessive speed was a contributing factor. This incident marks the 44th traffic-related fatality reported in Oahu for the current year, a significant increase compared to the 22 fatalities recorded at the same point last year.
