Fatal Dorchester County, S.C. car crash death of Montre Stewart
The Dorchester County Coroner has officially identified the individual who lost their life in the serious multiple-vehicle collision that took place on Interstate 95 on Sunday afternoon.
Montre Stewart, who is 55 years old and lives in Blythewood, was involved in a vehicle that was pushed forward by the one behind it, causing a chain reaction. She passed away at Trident Medical Center at 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, according to Coroner Paul Brouthers.
Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway explained that the accident began around 12:16 p.m. on Sunday on the northbound section of I-95, located near mile marker 82. This point is close to the Highway 178 exit and roughly 4.8 miles north of St. George.
Ridgeway provided further details, stating that three sport utility vehicles – a 2019 Cadillac, a 2023 Volvo, and a 2018 Honda – were halted due to traffic when a 2016 Acura collided with the rear of the Cadillac. This initial impact caused the Cadillac to strike the Volvo, which then impacted the Honda.
Emergency Medical Services transported the driver of the Cadillac, who was identified as Stewart, and the driver of the Acura, along with the passenger from the Cadillac, to a regional hospital. Tragically, Stewart did not survive her injuries.
Ridgeway noted that the occupants of the other two vehicles involved in the crash were not injured.
Law enforcement officials, specifically troopers, are currently working to determine the cause of the accident. An investigation is ongoing.
Stewart is scheduled to be buried.
