Two individuals died Monday night following a serious collision on Highway 26 in the Midlands region, law enforcement officials confirmed. The deceased persons identified are Pedro Gutierrez, age 21, from Gaston, and Michael Oneill, 75 years old, who resided in Charlotte.
The Newberry County Coroner’s office announced plans to conduct an autopsy on the victims later this week.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident happened on I-26 near mile marker 66 at approximately 11 p.m.
Officials reported that a 2021 Chevrolet van traveling east collided with a 2006 Ford van from behind. This impact reportedly caused the Ford van to spin out of control and strike the side of a 2021 Nissan sedan.
Both the driver of the Ford van and a passenger in the front seat of the Chevrolet van were pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility. A third individual involved in the collision was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Nissan vehicle involved in the crash suffered no apparent injuries.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol has stated that the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
