The victim’s grandmother told 11Alive’s Chase Houle on Sunday that Jeremiah was the twin brother who tragically lost his life.
Child fires gun, hitting 5-year-old brother in the chest; Mother charged with murder
La’Necia Bennett, who was 25 at the time, appeared in court on Thursday. A judge asked for a bond hearing in Superior Court, noting Magistrate Court couldn’t handle the case due to the seriousness of the charges.
According to arrest warrants, Bennett left a loaded gun in a black purse on her nightstand inside her bedroom. The warrants claim she knew her twin sons were in the room where the weapon was left unattended.
One of the brothers was holding the gun and fired one shot, striking the other twin in the chest, the warrants state. The documents further indicate the weapon was not secured in a gun safe or a safe location.
Bennett was the only adult in the house when the incident occurred, police reported. The shooting happened at the Village apartments on Pleasant Point Drive in south DeKalb County.
