Michael Lamotte dies in fatal Albuquerque shooting

Fatal Albuquerque shooting death of Michael Lamotte

University police systems recorded gunfire close to campus residences shortly after midnight on Friday. Approximately one hour later, officers responded to an alarm report regarding damage, finding shattered windows and traces of blood on the roof level of Mesa Vista Hall.

Law enforcement personnel did not identify the body of the 14-year-old, Michael Lamotte, until 2:30 a.m. The remains were located inside a student’s living quarters. Lamotte, a student at Rio Rancho High School, sustained a head wound from the firearm.

The source of the gunfire and property damage detected by the university’s monitoring system is linked to John Fuentes according to ongoing law enforcement investigations. Fuentes was apprehended by New Mexico State Police authorities in Los Lunas following a multi-hour search operation. He faces formal accusations including murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon, along with charges of evidence tampering. The 18-year-old has been officially processed for entry into the Metropolitan Detention Center. It remains uncertain whether legal representation has been secured for him.

Court documents filed in the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court provide additional details regarding the incident. The shooting incident generated significant media attention and prompted a campus-wide security lockout as numerous new students were completing orientation sessions at the residence halls, preparing for their upcoming university enrollment.

The precise motivations driving the alleged actions remain unexplained by available court records or official communications from investigators. A young man found in the same residence informed police that Fuentes “seemed to be under the influence of drugs” at the time of the head shot incident.

Prosecutors submitted a filing stating, “This conduct was exceptionally severe, unwarranted, and fraught with significant risk.” They emphasized, “The Accused demonstrated a complete disregard for human life and personal security.”

Efforts to contact the Fuentes family were unsuccessful on the day following the incident.

This occurrence represents the second prominent shooting incident at the University of New Mexico campus within a recent timeframe.
