A serious head-on collision occurred on State Route 9 near Santa Cruz at approximately 4:47 p.m. on Saturday, leading to the deaths of two individuals identified by the Santa Cruz County Coroner as Ernest Latta Jr., aged 61, and Lisa A. Latta, aged 59, both from Hayward. The accident involved a motorcycle colliding with a Tesla vehicle on a highway in the Santa Cruz mountains.

California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene shortly after 4:47 p.m. to investigate the crash on State Route 9, which was located just south of State Route 35. According to the CHP, an 18-year-old woman was driving a white Tesla Model 3 and had collided with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was traveling in the opposite direction. Both vehicles were moving at undetermined speeds at the time of impact.

Emergency responders confirmed that the occupants of the motorcycle were ejected from their bike and pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Tesla, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not sustain any injuries. Additionally, the motorcycle riders were both wearing helmets, though they were not secured with seatbelts. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and it has not been ruled out whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident.
