Fatal Oak Island car crash death of Kathryn Scullion
Emergency services were mobilized following a traffic incident in Oak Island. Responders arrived on the scene shortly after 11:20 a.m. on July 30, responding to a collision on E. Oak Island Drive and NE 27th Street.
Investigators identified the vehicles involved as a Jeep Wrangler and a Toyota Rav 4, which collided head-on. One driver was reported to be trapped inside their automobile.
According to official reports, the Toyota Rav 4 was operated by 67-year-old Kathryn Scullion, who crossed the center line while heading east. This action resulted in the crash with the Jeep Wrangler, driven by 47-year-old Steve Settle. Additionally, an Audi Q7 that was ahead of Settle sustained minor damage as it veered to avoid Scullion.
The town issued a statement indicating that the initial reason for crossing the lane was unclear, and there were no signs of impairment. Upon arrival, emergency personnel found all drivers alert but noted that Scullion was secured within her vehicle. First responders had to break the rear passenger window to extricate her and provide medical attention.
Both individuals were transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Scullion unfortunately succumbed to her injuries at the hospital, while Settle continues to receive treatment and is expected to recover.
