Fatal downtown Los Angeles shooting death of Gregory Derisso and a 52-year-old woman

Two individuals lost their lives and six others sustained injuries in a mass shooting that authorities link to a prior gathering in the downtown Los Angeles area. The LAPD reported the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday near 14th Place and Paloma Street.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers on routine patrol spotted someone entering what they believed was an unpermitted celebration around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Captain Letisia Ruiz explained the officers shut down the event and secured the premises. The LAPD stated over fifty people were present at that gathering.

Several hours later, responding to reports of gunfire, officers discovered eight people had been struck by bullets. A man died at the scene, while a 52-year-old female was transported to a hospital where she later succedeed. Six other people were shot, with at least one in critical condition. Some victims received medical transport by ambulance, while others went to the hospital independently. The ages of those injured spanned from 26 to 62 years old.

Limited information exists about the sequence of events. However, a video recording from the early morning hours shows people shouting and fleeing the scene.

Gregory Derisso has been identified as one of the fatalities. His father, Judner Derisso, stated his son, who had three young children and was planning a family dinner, did not appear as expected. When Derisso arrived at the scene, he learned his son was one of the two killed individuals. He characterized his son as a decent father to two boys and a girl. Derisso expressed frustration about his son’s association with potentially dangerous individuals, stating, “Sometimes you cannot choose friends for them. You see they’re dangerous, you tell them to stay away from the dangerous, he don’t want to stay away from the dangerous.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement expressing shock at the violence and emphasized accountability, stating, “This senseless violence and loss of life is devastating and those who are responsible must be held accountable.”

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. Police have not confirmed any connection between the initial party crackdown and the subsequent shooting. No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released a description of the suspected shooter.
