The official investigating body has officially identified the deceased person whose death resulted from the fatal traffic incident on US-101 northbound, south of Mariposa Reina, occurring on July 7, 2022. The individual is Jesus Tamayo, aged 41, a resident of Compton, California. The California Highway Patrol is currently examining this incident.
Further information provided by staff indicates that emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of a fatal highway accident. This involved a semi-trailer truck colliding with trees on Highway 101. It happened just before dawn near Calle Mariposa Reina, close to Gaviota.
Responding Santa Barbara County Fire service members and officers from the California Highway Patrol arrived at the location, which was south of the Mariposa Reina exit. They found the single driver of the large truck, Jesus Tamayo, deceased. Medical professionals confirmed his death at the scene.
Specialized teams for hazardous materials responded to attend to the diesel fuel that was leaking from the damaged vehicle. As a result of the accident, the northbound lanes of the highway were completely closed. This forced the use of the number one southbound lane at the Mariposa Reina interchange for traffic turning around, causing significant delays. Traffic on Highway 154 was also affected as it was utilized as a bypass route, with congestion reported there as well.
By midday, traffic authorities reported that all roadways had been fully cleared and reopened to the public.
