Fatal Olathe dump truck crash death of Leslie Kendig

A 68-year-old man from Miami County lost his life when a dump truck he was driving collided with another vehicle on Kansas Highway 7 near Olathe on Monday morning.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the fatal accident occurred in the northbound lanes of K-7, just south of College Boulevard, at approximately 8:39 a.m.

According to the Highway Patrol’s online crash log, Leslie Kendig from Osawatomie, Kansas, was operating the 2004 Sterling dump truck in the right lane when it drifted into the left lane for an unknown reason, striking a trailer belonging to a Ford F-350 pickup truck.

The crash log indicates that Kendig may have overcorrected his steering, causing the dump truck to roll into a ditch. Despite wearing a seatbelt, Kendig did not survive the impact and died at the scene.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck, a 52-year-old man from Lane, Kansas, suffered no injuries.

Local law enforcement and the Kansas Department of Transportation closed the northbound lanes of K-7 at College Boulevard. Drivers were directed to exit at College Boulevard before re-entering the highway.

Highway crews addressed the wreckage, and all traffic lanes were fully reopened shortly before 1 p.m.
