Coroner Donnie Grimsley has officially identified the deceased as 52-year-old Jimmy Jones. Further examination is scheduled at a medical facility in Charleston to clarify the specifics of his death.
Law enforcement officials involved in the incident stated that the State Law Enforcement Division’s Special Weapons and Tactics team was brought in to handle a situation where a man had locked himself inside a residence in the Lake View region of Dillon County. The event took place on Joanne Branch Road and was marked by a standoff.
During this period of high tension, exchanges of gunfire occurred between law enforcement officers and the individual, who was later identified as Jones. He was taken to a hospital and unfortunately did not survive his injuries.
In accordance with established procedures, the head of SLED directed the Florence County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent review of the incident.
