The initial assessment by officials indicates the motorcycle was proceeding eastbound on West 8th Street when it was struck from the north by an SUV traveling along Madison Street.

Paramedics conveyed the motorcyclist to a regional hospital, but the 49-year-old man ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Police identified him as John C. Coons.
