New Haven authorities reported that a 58-year-old pedestrian, later identified as Jaime Melendez-Martinez, was killed in a traffic-related incident on Foxon Boulevard during the early evening of Wednesday.

According to police statements, the victim was a local resident and his family was informed about his death.

Deputies from the New Haven police department were dispatched to the 200 block of Foxon Boulevard shortly before 10 p.m. on Wednesday, responding to an alert about a person struck by a vehicle.

Initial inquiries revealed that Jaime Melendez-Martinez had stepped into the eastbound lane of Foxon Boulevard from the Walmart parking area and was attempting to cross the street, though he was doing so outside a designated crosswalk.

As he was in the process of crossing, he was hit by an eastbound car heading toward Quinnipiac Avenue, police sources stated.

Emergency medical services transported the injured individual to Yale New Haven Hospital, but the fatal injuries proved too severe for survival.

The New Haven Fire Department arrived at the scene around 8:15 p.m. and confirmed the victim was deceased at the location.

The car driver departed the scene but eventually reported to the police station to file a report.

No suspects have been identified, and law enforcement is examining the incident for potential charges.

Investigators from the Crash Reconstruction unit are currently reviewing the circumstances of the accident.

There appeared to be a discrepancy between the times and details provided by police and fire officials, which remains unresolved as of Thursday.

The public is urged to contact detectives at 203-946-6304 or use the anonymous tip line at 866-888-TIPS (8477) if they have any information or witnessed the event.
