Janiyah Watkins, a 20-year-old, was involved in a vehicle accident early Tuesday morning. According to her mother, Deneen Winters, Janiyah and two companions were leaving a social gathering when the incident took place. Their car was stopped at the intersection of 72nd Street and South Green Street, with Janiyah operating the vehicle at the time.
According to Deneen Winters, the situation unfolded when someone approached the vehicle, possibly inquiring before gunfire erupted. Janiyah Watkins was struck by a bullet, resulting in fatal injuries. The 17-year-old passenger and a 20-year-old man were also injured during the incident.
The family gathered in East Chicago, Indiana, to support Deneen Winters. Winters shared her grief, mentioning the purchase of a necklace for her daughter who had not yet worn it. She described Janiyah as a loving and unifying person, involved in basketball and known for bringing people together.
This tragic event is described as a “senseless crime” by the family. They are planning a balloon release ceremony on Friday and are asking the public for any information regarding the incident.
