Fatal Philadelphia bus accident victim’s name needed

Philadelphia (WPVI) — Police are investigating a fatal collision between a bus and a pedestrian in Philadelphia’s University City section on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at the busy intersection of Market Street and Schuylkill Avenue, located near 30th Street Station.

According to authorities, the deceased was a 39-year-old man known to be using a wheelchair. At the time of the crash, he was reportedly engaged in panhandling outside a federal building close to the intersection.

Investigators indicate that the involved Peter Pan bus, headed towards Washington DC and carrying approximately 30 passengers, was proceeding on a green light traveling northbound. Crucially, police stated the bus driver failed to spot the individual in the wheelchair crossing the road in the midst of traffic.

Officials confirmed the victim was crossing against the flow of vehicles when he was hit.

A friend present at the scene, Brenden Nieves, described the victim as someone deeply familiar with the area. “He was a really good man,” Nieves shared emotionally. “I knew him for months, and I never encountered anyone quite like him. He was a genuinely kind person.”

Traffic crash investigators are currently examining the scene to determine the full circumstances. Despite the ongoing probe, the authorities have not released the name of the deceased.

Further information is expected as the story develops. Action News is pursuing comments from the bus company.
