The Beaufort County Coroner’s office announced that Waldo Mercado has been identified as the person killed in the collision which occurred on August 3rd, 2025.

Mercado, who was 51 years old and from Argentina, passed away as a result of the blunt force trauma he received when struck by a vehicle.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident.

A fatal automobile accident transpired in Beaufort County on the morning of August 3rd, 2025. Initial reports placed the incident on Bluffton Parkway, specifically near the area of Heritage Lakes Drive.

According to information released by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the event involved multiple vehicles and resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary details indicated the presence of four distinct units at the scene. One of these units was a 2014 Jeep Compass that was being towed by another vehicle, and it was reported to be unoccupied at the time of the crash. This specific vehicle was stationary in the eastbound lane of Bluffton Parkway after its attached trailer became dislodged.

Two individuals were identified as pedestrians within this scene. One pedestrian was designated by the Highway Patrol as Unit Three and the other as Unit Four. Tragically, Unit Four succumbed to their injuries immediately after the collision. Unit Three also received medical attention but survived the incident.

A second vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Rav4, was involved in the collision. The driver of the Rav4 was alone in the car and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The Highway Patrol provided a detailed account of the accident’s progression. They stated that the collision began when the 2014 Jeep Compass, which was disabled, collided with the trailer that had come loose from the vehicle. This trailer subsequently impacted both the Jeep Compass and the two pedestrians who were standing nearby.

This ongoing investigation continues to be handled by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
