Fatal San Mateo car crash death of Yina Marcela Ramos Bello

A tragic collision on Thursday evening in San Mateo resulted in the death of a mother and left her two young sons injured. According to police reports, the Toyota Prius she was driving crashed into an SUV that had disregarded a traffic signal.

The San Mateo Police Department and California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene around 6:17 p.m. near the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Highway 92. The collision involved two vehicles: a Prius and an SUV.

Yina Marcela Ramos Bello, identified by the county coroner as 30 years old and residing in South San Francisco, was the driver of the Prius. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her two children, aged 5 and 7, were passengers in the Prius and suffered critical but stable injuries; they were transported to a local hospital.

The driver of the Ford SUV, a man whose name has not been released, was hospitalized for minor injuries. He was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicate the Ford driver exited the eastbound lanes of Highway 92 at Alameda de las Pulgas without stopping for a red light. This action caused the SUV to strike the Prius, which was proceeding northbound on Alameda de las Pulgas with a green light.

Police are investigating the reasons for the driver’s failure to stop but have stated there is no indication of impairment. Traffic in both directions on Alameda de las Pulgas, along with the eastbound ramps connecting to Highway 92, remained closed for several hours during the investigation before being reopened.
