Fatal Summit County recovery of Sean Marquardt

Summit County Coroner Amber Flenniken confirmed that remains and effects found between August 2nd and 5th near Officers Gulch belonged to the same individual. A canine tooth discovered at the scene was sent to a DNA lab in Massachusetts, and the results confirmed it matched a sample from a family member of Sean Marquardt.

A resident of Vail, Marquardt had been reported missing in May. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office reported that personal belongings recovered near the remains belonged to him. In May, deputies located Marquardt’s vehicle near Officers Gulch but searches for the missing person were unsuccessful at that time.

On August 2nd, authorities were alerted to the possibility of human remains. A joint investigation involving the Sheriff’s Office, the Coroner’s office, the Summit County Rescue Group, Vail Police, and a forensic anthropologist from Mesa County was launched. This multi-agency effort conducted extensive searches over the next few days.

After dedicating over two hundred person-hours to the search, law enforcement teams located and retrieved the human remains.
