Erin Hayne dies in fatal Windham shooting
Fatal Windham shooting death of Erin Hayne
Police located the suspected shooter, James Ford, 48, from Windham. However, authorities confirmed he had died earlier Sunday.
Investigators reported no prior relationship between the deceased man, Ford, and the deceased woman, Hayne.
The fatal incident occurred Friday afternoon. The deceased victim, Erin Hayne, aged 33, was from Casco. She was shot multiple times at the intersection of Route 302 and Landing Road in North Windham.
Eyewitnesses and a nearby game warden provided emergency aid to Hayne. Despite their efforts, medical responders confirmed her death at the scene on Friday.
Following the fatal shooting, authorities identified the suspect as James Ford. Sources indicated he drove a silver sedan. This vehicle then abandoned in Raymond, Maine.
Officials confirmed an autopsy determined Ford died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Evidence showed he was the sole occupant of the vehicle used in the fatal shooting.
Maine State Police initially withheld information about Ford’s status and the victims’ identities. This was done to notify families and proceed with the investigation.
Hayne’s death resulted from multiple gunshot wounds, classified as a homicide by police.
Route 302 remained closed while authorities gathered evidence. The surrounding region received a shelter-in-place advisory. This notice was specific to the incident area.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South is leading the ongoing investigation. They seek public assistance regarding potential surveillance footage from the time of the incident.
