Jason Hankins dies in fatal Sacramento shooting

Fatal Sacramento shooting death of Jason Hankins

An individual sustained grave injuries from a drive-by attack towards the end of last week in Sacramento and subsequently passed away due to those injuries, as confirmed by law enforcement on Monday.

The incident transpired on August 12 at approximately noon in the vicinity of Morse Avenue and Lerwick Way, situated just north of Edison Avenue in the northeastern part of Sacramento. When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been struck in the head by gunfire, and emergency medical services transported him to a hospital where he was declared in serious condition.

Investigators revealed that the victim was a passenger inside an automobile when he was targeted by shots fired from a vehicle passing by. Following thorough inquiries, authorities identified the suspect as a 46-year-old named Jason Hankins, who was eventually located and apprehended the following day after attempting to hide his car and the weapon used.

The unidentified deceased’s passing occurred over the weekend, and it was announced that the charges against Hankins would be revised. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office subsequently issued a statement, with Sheriff Jim Cooper expressing strong disapproval of California’s Mental Health Diversion legislation, which enabled Hankins to undergo mental health treatment instead of facing jail time due to his prior convictions.

Hankins holds a record of criminal activity stretching back to 1997, encompassing offenses like robberies, shootings, and other firearms-related crimes. Cooper noted that the office’s discovery of Hankins’s previous offenses was attributed to deputies’ recollection of his prior arrests, as his conviction, arrest history, and booking photograph, which were connected to the diversion program, were expunged.

The sheriff emphasized that the Mental Health Diversion Program was not intended for individuals who pose a threat to public safety, such as career criminals. He further stated that Hankins exploited the system for personal advantage, resulting in adverse outcomes for the community.

Hankins is currently being held without the possibility of release on bail, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
