Law enforcement officials have confirmed the tragic death of Lucero San Pedro-Castro, 29, from gunshot wounds sustained in a confrontation in South Gate. The incident began Monday morning when Ms. San Pedro-Castro allegedly opened fire at employees of a California Closets location in Huntington Beach. One of the individuals targeted remains hospitalized following the shooting.

Ms. San Pedro-Castro, who also worked at the Huntington Beach store, was identified as the suspect. The shooting at Skylab Road occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. Following the initial incident, she fled the scene in her 2022 Toyota Corolla. Law enforcement agencies were notified of the armed suspect.

Around 9:30 a.m., South Gate police spotted the vehicle on San Carlos Avenue. During a routine traffic stop, Ms. San Pedro-Castro exited the car and pointed a firearm at a law enforcement officer. In response to the threat, the officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

Emergency medical services transported Ms. San Pedro-Castro to a nearby hospital. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries before 10 a.m. Tuesday. The other individual injured during the initial incident is expected to make a full recovery.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s homicide unit is investigating the fatal police shooting, while the Huntington Beach police continue their probe into the earlier shooting at the California Closets store. The relationship between Ms. San Pedro-Castro and the individuals involved in the incident remains under investigation.
