West Haven authorities reported that Dillon Cornelius, who was 18 years old, was killed during a shooting incident that occurred on College Street in the city’s downtown area early on Sunday morning. City police, responding to what they heard as gunfire near the intersection of College Street, Crown Street, and Chapel Street at approximately 2:52 a.m., discovered Mr. Cornelius unresponsive and injured by multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics provided initial care before transporting him by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital, where his injuries ultimately proved fatal. Police secured a significant crime scene along College Street between Crown and Chapel Streets, collecting numerous shell casings and noting damage to several nearby vehicles and businesses due to the gunfire.
Around 3:12 a.m., police were present at Yale New Haven Hospital when a second individual, a 23-year-old from Hamden, was treated for a minor graze wound sustained in the same downtown shooting incident. He stated he was in the area when he was struck by gunfire, and no direct link has been established between him and Dillon Cornelius at this time.
