Fatal Eugene car crash death of Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa.
A University of Oregon student, identified as 21-year-old Elizabeth Cardenas Figueroa, passed away earlier this week, ten days after being involved in a collision while cycling. The incident happened on Hilyard Avenue, and the university released an official statement confirming her death on Wednesday.
The victim was originally struck by a motor vehicle on that date, sustaining severe injuries that required extensive medical attention. According to information shared through a crowdfunding platform established for her family, Cardenas Figueroa was an international student from Mexico and suffered a significant traumatic brain injury as a result of the accident. The fundraising effort has collected approximately $10,000 in donations during the past week.
The Eugene Police Department confirmed the details of the fatality and stated that their ongoing investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding the collision. A university spokesperson, Angela Seydel, emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting Cardenas Figueroa’s loved ones, with provisions for counseling and other resources.
In addition to personal support, the university is offering services to assist its students, including access to University Counseling Services, which remains open until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and provides 24-hour crisis support. Another resource, Duck Nest at E245 University Health Services, is available for students seeking mental well-being and stress relief through peer advocates.
This story is expected to be updated as more information becomes available.
Editor’s note: Recent updates have included corrections to the locations of the university’s support services for clarity.
