Law enforcement officials arrested an individual following a serious traffic incident in the South Austin region this month. The event resulted in one fatality and one person receiving medical treatment for injuries.
The collision involved multiple vehicles and occurred at approximately 2:37 p.m. on Monday, August 11th, at the intersection of South First Street and West William Cannon Drive. Emergency medical services transported the operator of the first vehicle to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the second vehicle, identified as 47-year-old Samson Seablom, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Debris from the collision impacted a pedestrian, who was also transported to a medical facility.
On Wednesday, the Austin Police Department announced charges against 37-year-old James Preston Durbin. He faces allegations of involuntary manslaughter and an aggravated assault charge involving a deadly weapon, according to the police department. The aggravated assault accusation stems from the incident involving the pedestrian who suffered significant injuries.
Investigators are treating this incident as the 60th traffic fatality in Austin for the year 2025. This specific collision resulted in one loss of life, contributing to the city’s total death toll from traffic accidents reaching 64. For comparison, on the same date in 2024, Austin recorded 55 fatal crashes which caused 59 fatalities.
