**Shiva Khatri dies in fatal Sydney gas leak**
Fatal Sydney gas leak death of Shiva Khatri
A young man whose death was linked to a suspected gas leak at a Sydney restaurant has been identified as student Shiva Khatri. Investigators are examining the deadly incident.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the Haveli Indian restaurant located on Garfield Road in Riverstone on Tuesday morning after receiving reports of an unconscious individual inside the establishment. The 25-year-old Khatri was discovered unresponsive and, despite attempts to revive him, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Six other individuals, consisting of five police officers and one member of the public, were taken to the hospital as they too were affected by the fumes. The New South Wales Police confirmed that all those who were hospitalized have since been released.
Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood commended the bravery of the officers who tried to perform CPR on the young man, though they themselves were exposed to the toxic environment. He stated that these officers received treatment for symptoms related to the odour present in the restaurant area.
Fire and Rescue NSW’s Superintendent Adam Dewberry explained that the people inside the restaurant were overcome by gas. He clarified that several individuals appeared to have suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. This colourless and odourless gas is known to be both flammable and potentially lethal.
It is believed that Khatri was employed as a cleaner at the restaurant at the time of the incident. SafeWork NSW has initiated an investigation into the matter.
The family of Shiva Khatri is organizing fundraising efforts to facilitate the return of his body to Nepal for burial arrangements. His brother, Mandip, issued an emotional plea for donations to support the repatriation process and to provide assistance to the grieving family during this difficult period.
Online memorials have been created in honour of the 25-year-old, with tributes remembering him as a bright and kind individual. His aunt, Shanti, expressed her profound sorrow, stating that her family’s happiness had been stolen and asking for Shiva to rest in peace.
