Rita Mariani and Stephan Mariani died in a personal watercraft mishap on Caxambas Bay in Marco Island on Sunday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The fatal accident happened after the couple’s jet ski collided with a boat lift. Their community is mourning their loss. Becky Irwin, a former council member and close friend, described Rita and Stephan as deeply devoted to each other and wonderful people. She shared that they were both present at the 911 memorial on Marco Island recently.
Friends recall the couple as incredibly social individuals. Tennille Tateo, who knew them for seventeen years, stated they were like family. She mentioned their favorite activity was dancing, often sharing the dance floor with just the two of them on Friday nights. The families and friends of the Marianis are devastated by the tragic news.
Rita and Stephan cherished Marco Island and were known for their warmth towards everyone they knew. Tennille Tateo emphasized that their friends were family to them. Becky Irwin added that their love and character will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew them.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is seeking any witnesses or camera footage related to the accident to aid in their investigation.
