Fatal South Tacoma shooting death of Dustin Carter
The individual killed in the South Tacoma shooting incident, in which two other people sustained gunshot injuries, was identified on Monday by the medical examiner. According to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office, 49-year-old Dustin Carter from Gig Harbor succumbed to a chest wound caused by a gunshot on September 21. The death was officially classified as a homicide.
Tacoma police located Carter that afternoon following a 911 call reporting shots fired in an alleyway between South Warner Street and Puget Sound Avenue, situated a few blocks from South Tacoma Way. Court documents indicate Carter was found lying beside a red van when officers arrived, near another man who had been shot in the chest and was in critical condition. Tragically, Carter was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Later that same evening, the third individual involved in the shooting was apprehended. This person approached police on Portland Avenue despite sustaining gunshot wounds to their right arm and side. The arrested individual, identified as 28-year-old Donovan Bailey O’Neal, subsequently entered a plea of not guilty to charges including second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm.
