Jaime Stebelton dies in fatal Shelley car crash
Fatal Shelley car crash death of Jaime Stebelton
Aisha, Idaho authorities reported Sunday afternoon that a 35-year-old woman and a very young child tragically lost their lives following a serious vehicle mishap. The car they were riding in flipped into a nearby canal.
The law enforcement agency informed the media that the female adult was confirmed to be Jaime Stebelton, who was a resident of Rexburg.
According to an official statement from the local sheriff’s department, the collision happened around 1:40 p.m. It was reported initially that there were several people inside a submerged automobile, specifically a 2011 model Hyundai Sonata, located in the canal. Concerned citizens attempted to rescue those inside the submerged car.
These bystanders managed to turn the vehicle over and began the rescue operation to get the occupants out.
Both the woman and the infant were reported to be unresponsive with no breathing. Emergency medical procedures were started immediately, and the pair was rushed to a regional medical center. Regrettably, they did not survive their injuries.
The authorities explained that the Sonata, which was heading south, stopped completely at a two-way intersection. A newer vehicle, a 2022 Hyundai Palisade, was approaching from the east when the Sonata moved forward and collided with it.
The occupants of the Palisade, including a young male driver, were taken for medical evaluation but suffered only minor injuries. The two small boys inside that vehicle were not injured.
Because of the collision, the Palisade contacted a power pole and then stopped. The Sonata, however, continued its path and overturned into the canal.
The official report mentioned that the children involved in the Palisade were properly secured with seatbelts. The adults in the Sonata, though, were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
In order to manage the scene, the area around the intersection was closed off. This closure lasted for three hours to allow for the rescue efforts and the recovery of the vehicles.
