Fatal Chicago debris strike death of Jakine Austin
A Chicago man met his demise early Monday morning after sustaining severe injuries from flying debris on the Dan Ryan Expressway. The incident occurred around 5:10 a.m., specifically in the outbound express lanes of I-94 located between the 29th Street and 31st Street interchanges. A large metallic fragment, which investigators believe dislodged from a semi-truck carrying an intermodal container, penetrated the windshield of a southbound GMC Yukon. The driver was struck directly by this piece of debris and subsequently lost control, crashing into a nearby concrete barrier. He was transported to a hospital, where unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the deceased as 45-year-old Jakine Austin of Chicago. Authorities closed several outbound express lanes, running from the Stevenson Expressway to 31st Street, for an extended period to conduct their investigation. Anyone possessing dashcam footage or having witnessed the accident is urged to contact the Illinois State Police at 847-608-3200.
